GSHS Summer WAVE Program students in Ms. Krista Marcum’s class celebrated World Sea Turtle Day by locating, measuring, and processing a mock sea turtle nest. They learned about protections offered for this endangered species and how important it is to leave only footprints, fill in holes, and keep bright lights off of the beach. Thanks to Debbie Harbin, Ann Godfrey, and Lauren Thomas from Share the Beach for helping with the mock nest! Students also toured the Gulf State Park Pier, took sand and water samples to check for microplastics, and used slush guns to search for invertebrates that live in the sand.

21st Century EcoTourism Summer Camp

Our 21st Century EcoTourism Summer Camp has had a great first two week! They have gone on hikes in Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, propagated plants, made nature journals, tie-dyed with natural products, biked in the State Park, made pencil catapults, learned some Spanish, and even tasted some home grown products from the Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism & Sustainability
