Committed to the health and wellness of our students

Gulf Shores City Schools are committed to the health and wellness of our students. Each school has a registered nurse available to provide a range of services. At the beginning of each year nurses collect student health information to plan for needs during the school day.

School nurses strive to ensure all students can fully participate in educational programs. This starts with daily attendance and includes being well-rested, well-fed, and ready to learn. Our goal is for all students to be successful in school.

My name is Melissa House and I have been a Registered Nurse for 25 years. I am in my 20th year as a school nurse and prior to that I was an emergency department nurse.  I was born and raised in Foley and always knew when I was growing up that I wanted to be a nurse. After graduating from Foley High School, then off to nursing school I went.

My husband and I have lived in Gulf Shores since 1994 and both of our children attended Gulf Shores Schools.  Our oldest daughter Kristen is a 2015 graduate of GSHS, a 2019 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and is currently teaching 4th grade at Hawkins Elementary School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Our son graduated from GSHS in 2019 and is currently at the University of West Florida majoring in mechanical engineering.

Throughout my school nursing career, and now serving as the lead school nurse for Gulf Shores City Schools, my passion for this profession continues to remain strong. Allowing to be entrusted with the health care of students and having the ability to bridge healthcare and education which allows students to develop to their fullest potential  truly is a privilege for me.
